Nagao Kanji si è recentemente trasferito a Tokyo, dove ora si ritrova a lavorare con difficoltà in una piccola agenzia pubblicitaria. Si riconnette con un vecchio amico di casa, Mikami Kenichi, uno studente di medicina di una famiglia benestante a cui non manca mai la compagnia femminile. Per anni, i due hanno condiviso una cotta per il loro compagno di classe d'infanzia, il gentile e innocente Sekiguchi Satomi, che ora vive anche lui a Tokyo. A mescolare le cose c'è Akana Rika, una ragazza contagiosamente allegra che lavora presso l'azienda di Kanji che decide di chiamarlo con il soprannome di "Kanchi".
Tokyo Love Story è il manga capolavoro di Saimon Fumi sulle relazioni tra questi quattro giovani adulti che vivono nell'era della bolla a Tokyo. È stato adattato in una fiction televisiva estremamente popolare nel 1991.
